Ciao CelloBella!

The Mydols practiced with CelloBella yesterday in preparation for the upcoming Garden Family Hootenanny on Sunday, July 12 at The Whitney. I have always loved the cello, dating back to the filmstrips we used to watch in music class at Beverly Elementary School, so it will be exciting to share the stage with cellist Alison Donohue (pictured above). Since the cello has a bass voice, I'll have to find a way to set my bass guitar apart within the sound.

At the Hootenanny, the Mydols will join CelloBella on "I'm a Believer," "You are My Sunshine" and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." Plus, we'll each do our own sets. It should be a great time.

Try Trunkettes for Bathing Beauty

If you've had a baby, but not a Kate Plus 8-style tummy tuck, you might not be eager to don a Geftaki suit (as seen on desperate housewife Teri Hatcher in my last blog).
Trunkettes, swimsuits with mens-style bottoms yet feminine flair, are a great alternative.
The Mydols met the creators of Trunkettes when we appeared on The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch last year. CEO Hilary Genga was inspired to invent Trunkettes after attending a pool party in her native L.A. While all the dads and kids splashed in the water, the moms stayed on the sidelines, ashamed to be seen in their swimsuits.
Not fair!
Trunkettes let women play like the boys - surf, swim, beach volleyball - without worrying about a wardrobe malfunction.
Hilary was so sweet she sent us all samples of Trunkettes, and I love them!

Haute Mama - Geftaki Swimwear

My friend Trisha Geftos, a designer based in Riverview, Mich., is enjoying great success with her sexy Geftaki Swimwear line.

Hot mama Teri Hatcher is the latest celeb seen in Geftaki. Paris Hilton made a splash last fall when she taped one of her fake presidential campaign videos wearing a cut-out leopard print Geftaki number while lounging poolside. Kim Kardashian is also a fan.

Here, Teri looks stunning in a two-tone bikini with python trim from Geftaki's 2009 Signature Collection.

For Teri's suit, visit http://www.geftaki.com/. For her bod, keep dreaming!

Mydols at Tempermill

Last night the Mydols recorded at Tempermill Studios in Ferndale. Founded by David Feeny, the studio is famous for its sound engineers, who have worked with everyone from The White Stripes and Eminem to The Go, Dirtbombs, and April Mydol's husband's band, Blanche.

They even have a Grammy for Loretta Lynn's "Van Lear Rose."

We recorded "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" for speakaboos.com. We also recorded a song I wrote called "6 Questions." Hopefully it will be the first of many studio dates so we can get a CD together soon.

CCS Student Exhibition Re-Cap

Last night we attended the College for Creative Studies Annual Student Exhibition Gala. After years of staying home to hold down the fort, watching the kids while Jeff attended classes at night to earn his Bachelor of Fine Arts, I finally got a taste of CCS life and met his classmates, instructors and friends.
Everyone was celebrating graduation and buzzing with excitement for the future. After the exhibit, we stopped for drinks at the Bronx Bar, the traditional CCS post-graduation hangout.
The student exhibit is up through May 29, and it's known as a great place to pick up the work of up-and-coming artists while it's still somewhat affordable. I saw so many pieces I loved, and we didn't even make it through a quarter of the show before the event came to an end.
The best news is one of Jeff's paintings sold (above)!

Entertainment Arts Department Grads

One of Jeff's classmates proves that which does not kill you only serves to make you stronger.

It took 3 1/2 years. My husband finally walked across the stage and collected his diploma last night.
He was among 24 Entertainment Arts graduates in the College of Creative Studies Class of 2009. They are an elite and talented group, and I'm looking forward to seeing where the degree takes everyone.

Tonight we'll be attending the Annual CCS Student Exhibition. Jeff is exhibiting paintings, drawings, digital art and the iPhone Apps he and Peter created through their company, Tenfold Games.
We got a sneak peek of the exhibits last night, and I can't wait to see more of the students' work ... And of course toast a glass of wine to Jeff's spectacular achievement. We are all so proud!

Monkees Mobile

Yesterday was my birthday, and also my husband's. Being born on the same day played a big part in us getting together. It was fate, afterall. But now that we've been married for some time, having our birthday on the same day isn't so great. We both want to be pampered, and neither wants to do the pampering. We both want to sleep in. Get presents. Have our cake and not have to make it too.
So our birthday ended up being somewhat of a stalemate this year.
My big highlight was leaving the house for a while to film a video with the Mydols in the authentic Monkees Mobile. The car, created in Los Angeles for the original Monkees show, is now owned by a Livonia man. He took us for a spin while the cameras were rolling. What fun!
Then, he gave each of us a small toy replica of the car to take home, so V. was the one who ended up getting a present on our birthday.
Although we did end up making a cake together, and eating it too!

Lunch with Fashion Designer Naeem Khan

Naeem Khan with Detroit area models in his Fall 2009 gowns.

Model Lauren Poole-Romeo with Naeem Khan

Internationally-known fashion designer Naeem Khan, who has dressed the likes of Carrie Underwood, Eva Longoria and Beyonce, visited metro Detroit this week to support the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America Michigan Chapter.
Hosted by Saks Fifth Avenue, Somerset Collection, Khan attended a benefactor party at the home of Harriett and Sheldon Fuller last night. Today, he showed his Fall 2009 collection at a luncheon and fashion show at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills.
I had the pleasure of being seated right next to Naeem, and he was a delight.
Khan's go-glam-or-go-home attitude was reflected in his sumptuous gowns and cocktail dresses characterized by metallic textures, chunky rhinestone collars and rich fabric created by laser printing a floral design on lace using the latest technology.
"I don't hold back. You come to me for a full dose of glamour," he said. "Don't dilly dally here or there. You want attention, you're going to get attention with my clothes."
The Indian born designer, now based in New York City, is celebrating 30 years of marriage to his wife, Ranjana, who has her pick of Khan's designs.
“I created this collection in reaction to the doom and gloom that the world was falling apart. It’s scary, scary times,” Khan said. “You either went all the way up or you really sized down.”
Yvette Bing, wife of newly-elected Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, (shown here with her Saks personal shopper Samia Jallad) is a big fan of Khan's work. His fashion show was her first outing as first lady. Bing has several of the designer's pieces, including a black shift adorned with a snaking design of white pearls and beadwork.
"I wanted to wear it today but I thought it would be too formal," she said.
After snapping a few photos with the models backstage, including my good friend Lauren Poole-Romeo (picture above), Khan raced off for the airport, jetting back to NYC to accept a "Dare to Dream" award from the Diabetes Research Institute this evening.

Call Ken Dewey, director of the 5th Avenue Club at Saks, (248) 643-9000, to pre-order any of Khan's pieces.

Kid's Stuff at Green Street Fair

I'm always on the lookout for family-friendly fun in Metro Detroit (especially if it's free), so I have to give a shout out to the 2nd annual Green Street Fair in Downtown Plymouth this weekend, May 1-3.

Never mind that one of the organizers, Mandi Buckland, was my Maid of Honor. I would recommend the Green Street Fair even if Mandi and I never sang along to Yaz records in her family camper, or lived together in the Bird's Nest on Fairbrook Ave. Or danced until 4 a.m. during Mardi Gras on St. Maarten.

Anyway, we're moms now and there's plenty for kids to do at Green Street Fair.

Fort Box, in Kellogg Park, encourages tykes to play in a city of recycled cardboard boxes, like this one Mandi made (pictured), as well as make their own fort box.

Kids will also love Carousel Acres Petting Farm and the Green Magician, as well as all the healthy snacks!

Meanwhile, moms can shop the fab green vendors, and learn from lectures in the Green Speakers Series, like "Green Crafting for the Whole Family," presented by Lish Dorset of Handmade Detroit.

So much to do! Just don't schedule anything at the Green Street Fair from 2-4 p.m. Saturday ... that's when you'll be seeing the Mydols at MamapaZOOza!

Night at Northville Downs

Last night Jeff and I double dated at the Northville Downs with Northville Record Photographer John Heider and his date, Dorie. The racetrack is ending its live harness racing season just as Kentucky Derby fever gets under way.

I love living by the track, and I've always been fascinated by the horse racing culture. On Friday night we got a behind-the-scenes tour from Publicity Manager Michael Carlo.

Mike took us to the stables, where horses, vets, state regulatory officials, crew and riders were in the midst of race night.

"We have 93 horses and 12 races tonight. It's controlled chaos," Carlo said.

We met the sparkled and fringed rodeo gal who wrangles runaway horses. We also met drivers, including Art Mc Illmurray, who recently celebrated his 3,000th win.

John and Dorie got to ride in the starting gate truck. Meanwhile, Jeff and I broke even on our bets thanks to Champagne Slammer and JL's Last Dance. We picked them simply because we liked their names (Jeff's initials are JL), and Carlo said there's no shame in that.

"There are a thousand ways to place a bet and a thousand ways to pick a horse," he said.

Northville Downs will simulcast the Kentucky Derby this Saturday, May 2. Doors open at 9 a.m. and the first race posts at 10:30 a.m.

Denim Day event for HAVEN

Fashion Group International is hosting a fabulous Denim Day event to benefit HAVEN tonight at 6 p.m. at the Detroit Historical Museum.
Karen Buscemi, editor of StyleLine Magazine, is giving a trend talk, and there's a DVD of Fall/Winter 2009/10 runways from Paris, Milan and New York.
I hope Karen talks about spring and summer fashion, because I just can't bear to think any longer about tweed coats and boots with the fur.
It's time for those flip flops and sarongs! Come on spring!

Soccer Mom 101

As of this morning, I've joined the ranks of soccer mom. My 3-year-old son had his first 'game' today at Millennium Park in Northville. I think I'm more into it than he is!

V. loved the stretching and exercises, but when it came time to play 3 on 3, he refused. Instead of chasing that silly ball he attempted to explain to Coach Hein, while the game was in full play, that he had a better idea.

His method was to stand on a fixed spot mid-field and use 'the force' to move the ball, simply by waving his hand. He even went so far as to teach the hand move to his teammate, so they could use the force together.

He has already earned the nickname Storm Trooper.

Meanwhile, I was getting schooled in the ways of the soccer moms. I quickly felt part of the team. Go Liverpool!

We need shin guards, our own ball, camp chairs, or at least a blanket that folds up and has a cool handle. Anyway, I'm excited to see my teammates again, whether Verick likes soccer or not!
For him, the day ended on a good note, with Rice Krispie treats and juice boxes.

As one mom told me, "It's all about the snacks!"
I can't wait until it's our turn to bring them!

New Song: 6 Questions

6 Questions (who, what, where, when, why and how)
Von B. / Miller

You're having a party and you want me there
but you gotta tell me who what why and where
I need to know the time, place and date
So I can hurry up now and not be late

Chorus:
Who what where when why and how
You've got to tell me please tell me now
Who what where when why and how
You've got to tell me please please tell me now

You're writing a story and it's gotta be good
Cause it's going in the paper in your neighborhood
You tell the chief please just the facts
There are six little questions you need to ask

Chorus

There's somebody special you want to greet
but you don't know what to say when you finally meet
Just talk to them and you can't go wrong
Remember six questions by singing this song

Chorus

Ernie Harwell on Opening Day

I had the pleasure of interviewing Ernie Harwell today. With tomorrow being Opening Day at Comerica Park, it was a great time to meet 'the voice of Tigers baseball.'
"It's a big thrill for me. It's always a great occasion. Always has been in Detroit," Harwell said of Opening Day. "There are only two cities in the U.S. that have a big civic celebration on Opening Day. Detroit is one of them." *
Harwell said the season opener is three holidays in one.
"It's like Easter because a lot of people come just once a year, like church. It's like Fourth of July because you have all the fireworks and excitement. And it's like Christmas because you open your new present. Fans see what they're going to get in their package for the year, and of course everyone starts equal."
So, how does Harwell think the Tigers will fare?
"Hope springs eternal," he said.
Harwell called Detroit Tigers games from "the corner of Michigan and Trumbull" 1960-2002.
I remember my gramps would listen to games on the car radio while I played in the park. Harwell truly was the voice of summer.
These days, he's a spokesperson for healthy living.
At 91, he jumps rope 300 times a day, and starts each morning with a 15-minute routine of stretching, lunges and deep squats. Then he works out in the gym at his retirement home in Novi.
"I think the only day I missed they were fixing something in the gym and it was closed," he said.
As a spokesperson for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Harwell promotes walking as an easy route to fitness.
"All you need is a pair of shoes," he said, recalling the days he and coach Sparky Anderson would walk together for exercise in cities across the nation as they toured with the great American pasttime.
Tomorrow at the ballpark, Harwell will lead a tribute to former Tigers third baseman George Kell, who died last month.
On my way to the interview with Harwell, I passed the old Tigers stadium. Judy Mydol really gave a good fight to save that place, and Harwell was a strong part of the effort for a long time.
Still, Harwell conceded he likes Comerica Park.
"There's lots to do for families, even if you don't watch the game," he said.

* The other city that celebrates Opening Day like The D is Cincinatti, according to Harwell.

Local author pens road trip tale

I just finished "The Leisure Seeker," (Feb., 2009, 288 p. Morrow, $24.95) a new book by Ferndale author Michael Zadoorian. It tells the story of John and Ella, an elderly Detroit couple who put rubber to the road and embark on one last cross-country road trip.
They drive old Route 66 and the crumbling highway, dotted with ghost towns and forlorn roadside attractions, becomes a metaphor for the sunset of their lives.
The fact that John has Alzheimer's and Ella is dying of breast cancer makes their adventure all the more daunting - and important.
The subject matter seems depressing, but the book isn't a buzzkill. It's deftly written and full of humor, though achingly sad.
On the lighter side, it's chock full of inside references to The D, including Vernor's, the Uniroyal tire on I-94, and the habit us residents have of pointing out our hometown on an upraised palm.
On the heavy side, it is a story about true love ... not the kind of Hollywood romance you dream of when you're young, but the reality of what it means to share your journey to the end of the line.
I am the only one awake in the house, and I indulged in this rare quiet time to finish the book. My husband is snoring and the kids are safely tucked in bed.
Zadoorian's writing haunts me with the sensation that my life is flying by faster than scenery across the Leisure Seeker's windshield. It's almost too much to bear.
I have to go peek at my little ones now and savor this precious time.

Direct from Brazil: Canja Rave

It was exciting to meet Brazilian rock duo Canja Rave a couple weeks back when they came to town. They are friends of Johnny Miller's, and stayed at his house during their U.S. mini -tour.

Paula Nozzari (drums and vocals) and Chris Kochenborger (guitar and vocals) are from Porto Alegre, where they've been in important bands that have played around the world. Their music is in Portuguese and English.

During their visit, they played in Toledo and Bowling Green, Ohio, then Johnny joined them on stage at the Lager House in Detroit. While they were in the D, they were thrilled to record a single with legendary music producer Jim Diamond.

Then, they went to Austin, where they played two gigs during SXSW, at The Rio and Lamberts.

A documentary filmmaker captured their whole visit to America, and shot footage of Detroit bands while he was here, so a recent Mydols band meeting just might end up on Brazilian TV!

Green Drinks in the D

When I worked at Grass Roots Cafe in South Lake Tahoe, "Green Drinks" were 1-ounce wheatgrass shots. But thanks to April Mydol, the phrase has taken on a whole new meaning.

After completing Detroit's BizDom U., April is forming a new company based on the environmental movement. As part of her business, she's bringing the international "Green Drinks" concept to Metro Detroit.

Green Drinks stages networking events that bring together "like-minded individuals and organizations to connect, converse and collaborate on issues of health and sustainability."

Detroit's first "Green Drinks" party will take place on Earth Day at the Majestic Cafe.

If you have "ideas, innovations and motivations centered on sustainability and green living in metro Detroit," drop by 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 22 for some organic beer, healthy snacks and inspiring conversation.

Green is the color of new money, and it's going to take everyone's creativity, energy and drive to turn things around in Michigan and nationwide. April is among the first wave of entrepreneurs at the forefront of creating our next economy.

Cheers!

For more information on this event, check out Green Drinks Detroit or call April at 313-345-2004.

Donny Deutsch Loves The Mydols

My friend Choya came to work last week and said she was listening to "The Big Idea" on CD, and Donny Deutsch mentioned The Mydols!
Turns out, we're included in "Living Loud," Chapter 4 of his new book (Hyperion, 2008, $24.95).
Mydols founder Judy Davids has been a guest on Donny's CNBC show several times, to tell the inspiring story of how she started a rock band at age 42, despite having a full-time job, husband, two sons and virtually no experience playing guitar.
When I first joined the Mydols, Donny flew the whole band out to New York City to appear on "The Big Idea."
In his book, Deutsch uses Judy's story as an example that anyone can make their dreams come true.
"Judy’s message is as long as you have passion and fun, and are constantly learning and evolving, you can do anything," he writes.
Unfortunately, Donny's show has been put "on hiatus," reportedly due to the fact that it's inappropriate for the current economic crisis. I totally disagree. I think with mega-corporations and job security vanishing, entrepreneurial spirit is stronger than ever.
I would love to see "The Big Idea" come back, although Donny might want to tone down his emphasis on "making millions."
As he says in his book: "being rock stars hasn’t made (the Mydols) rich yet, but the payoff is huge in other ways."

Dan Zanes Wants to Party!

So Dan Zanes called me today from the Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain, where he and his friends are playing two nights of shows at the Spring of Culture Festival. I decided to post our whole interview because he is just too cool.

How was your show last night?
I think we had one of the best concerts we’ve ever had since we’ve been doing this. It was everything I always wanted to see from the stage, truly an all-ages show, even teenagers were dancing and lots and lots of dads, and it was a mixture of the Arabic community, Indian community, expats, English and South African, so it was beautiful. There were a lot of Arabic dads going wild. I felt like we were really able to reach people in a way that was really special. They don’t have that kind of thing here that everybody’s in it together. That’s always been my goal to have a party where everyone is really together regardless of age and background. Tonight was a perfect example of that. Everyone going completely wild.

You're touring schedule is crazy ...
This is a busy spring. We’re here in the Middle East then we’re coming to you in Ann Arbor, then we’re going to the U.K. We get to go home for a few days and weekends. Once the spring is over we’ll slow down for a little bit but I’m really grateful to be able to do it. On a purely basic level I'm grateful to have work. For me it never feels like work. It feels like a joyous experience we get to share with people.

I know you’ve been to Detroit before, because I actually saw you at the airport a couple years ago. I yelled your name like a mom fan dork.
That always makes my day. If I was alone, it was probably when I spoke at a librarians’ conference there. Otherwise I travel with my band. I have played in Ann Arbor before and it’s always been a wild time.

You are always looking for new songs. Did you have time to pick any up in the Middle East?
We gave a presentation today to a group of teachers and I think some of them are going to look for songs for us. We did a few Arabic songs, that was really great because I felt it helped connect us to the audience. It’s a sign of respect and interest. We try and be as inclusive as possible. We live in New York, where there’s a huge Arabic community. It’s natural for us to learn Arabic music along the way.

What is your mission?
What I hope from all this, is that people go out and make their own music. Anyone can do it. It’s not that complicated. Music making is one of life’s great pleasures but we tend to buy it instead of play it. It’s easy and I think when people see us play they can get a sense of the possibilities. It’s a joyous experience. It’s not about being technically proficient. It’s just about participating with spirit and gusto.

So you are working on a show for Disney?
We finished a pilot for them, and we’re waiting to hear back whether the show is a good fit for them. We made something we’re really proud of. Hopefully they’ll feel good about it.

I hear your concerts have kiddie mosh pits.
It’s not too much like a concert. It’s really much more like a party. It feels more like the Grateful Dead than the London City Orchestra. It’s a communal event. If people sit quietly it can make us a little bit nervous that we’re not doing something right. People come ready to sing, there’s a lot of singing along and quite a bit of dancing. We’ve always had really good dance parties in Ann Arbor. It’s always been fun to play there for that reason.

I know you were in the Del Fuegos, but how did you start playing family music
When my daughter was born I wanted music that the two of us could listen to together. I wanted to be able to connect to it emotionally as well as her. The music that I grew up with, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, I consider that to be all ages music that grown-ups and kids listen to together. I wanted an updated version of that but couldn’t find what I was looking for so I decided to make it myself. I just did it for kids and families in the neighborhood. I didn’t think I would be doing it 10 years later as a career but I realized it’s something that got me really excited and I was good at it. All ages music is the old fashioned way and if I think there’s something old fashioned that should be updated or preserved, I’m all for it.

Okay, well, thanks for taking the time to chat. Hopefully I’ll see you in Ann Arbor!
Thanks for spreading the word. The band is sounding better than ever and all six of us will be there rocking out, so people should put on their dancing shoes and sing at the top of their lungs.

Dan Zanes and Friends will play at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday, March 29 at Rackham Hall. Tickets, $20 adults; $10 kids, are still available. Visit http://www.ums.org/

Mydols on the Block

The Mydols were on the auction block at the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women Luncheon, held Feb. 25 at the Renaissance Center.

We donated a purse to the silent auction, and it sold for $50!

Whimsically whipped together by Renaissance Woman Judy Mydol herself, the purse was stocked with rock-mom gear like a gift card for iTunes, tiny Mydols CDs and Daisy Rock guitar picks.

I found out who bought it.

"It was beautiful, gorgeous, funky, creative," said Tyra Tomlin, who works at Children's Hospital of Michigan. She said she was excited when she got the bag home and discovered all the goodies.

"I loved the handbag and it was just so cute. I didn't even look inside," she said.

Tyra was especially thrilled to contribute to the prevention and treatment of heart disease in women.

"Heart disease runs in my family," Tyra said.

All together, the auction raised over $15,500 for the Metro Detroit AHA.

The Mydols did our small part to keep women's hearts healthy, and help one lucky bidder look fabulous as well!

ROCK STAR WEDDING

The Basements on stage at Genitti's Hole-In-The-Wall, Northville, Mich.

Duet with my new hubbs, "Never Enough."

Throwing the bouquet.

Photos by Christopher A. Jablonski

It was my 4th wedding anniversary yesterday. My wonderful husband gave me an emerald necklace and wrote me the most beautiful love letter.

I gave him a book of photographs from our wedding that I created on shutterfly. It took me four years to get that wedding album done!

As it pertains to rock 'n' roll, since this is my Mydols blog, The Basements played our last gig at my wedding. Another sign of how great my husband is. He indulged my band, and even joined us onstage for a duet!

Mydols at Metro Times Blowout

I'm so excited for our show at the Metro Times Blowout. The Blowout has a long and storied tradition that implicates just about every homegrown band ever listed in the calendar pages of the Metro Times.

It was launched 12 years ago by April Mydol's husband, Brian Boyle (with rock journalist Chris Handyside), and this year April herself is organizing the first ever Blowout Family Hootenanny.

The Mydols are proud to be on the bill (along with CelloBella! and Danny Kroha), helping to make more Blowout history.

Parents who buy wristbands for Blowout weekend (200 bands at 15 venues throughout Hamtramck) can bring their kids for free to the Family Hootenanny 1-4 p.m. Saturday, March 7 at Cafe 1923.

I played the Blowout with my old band The Basements many moons ago. Like most local acts we got our start in Hamtramck, adding our sticker to the decor at Paycheck's, then working our way up to Small's and the Belmont. The Basements shared a bill with Haflife at the Hamtramck Blowout, and this year former Basements guitarist Liz opens for Haflife at Trowbridge House Saturday night with her current band The Ruiners.

If I could indulge in the rest of the Blowout, I would check out the Ruiners, Detroit Cobras, Wildcatting and the Friendly Foes.

But I'm in a mom band now, which means I'll have to get home to the kids!

Beardy the Bearded Dragon

Meet Beardy the Bearded Dragon. He belongs to our drummer Laura's very large and multi-specied family. Laura will introduce us to a new pet each month on our show, Mommie Coolest, set to debut on CMN next month.

Beardy braved the cold to do the taping at Leon & Lulu's in Clawson last week. I fell in love with the little guy!

Happy Valentine's Day!

We had a Valentine's Day Mydols practice this morning, and Johnny Miller gave us all prints of this woodcut he made last night.

Laura gave everyone candy.

At home, I got the most beautiful cards from my husband, son and daughter, along with a heart-shaped box of truffles.

What a great holiday ... one big excuse to eat chocolate and cuddle!
